Reed Gold Mine

Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. From this discovery, gold mining spread gradually to nearby counties and eventually into other southern states. During its peak years gold mining was second only to farming in the number of North Carolinians it employed. The estimated value of gold recovered reached over one million dollars a year. Badin Historic Museums

Welcome to Badin Historic Museum. The story of our town begins circa 10,000 BC when Native Americans camped on the hill above the falls of our river and fashioned spearheads from outcroppings of rhyolite rock. Many native tribes followed, using this area until the 1700's. Settlers arrived in the 1600's and 1700's and the river was given a name: the Yadkin. Its rushing waters were instrumental in the beginning of our town.

Historic Gold Hill

Gold Hill is located in Rowan County at the intersection of Old Beatty Ford Road and St. Stephen's Church Road. This picture shows St. Stephen's Church Road looking south toward Cabarrus County. Many of Christopher Beaver's descendants are buried at St. Stephen's Church. St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, which was begun in 1837, is located in Cabarrus County. The area around St. Stephen's and Mt. Olive Lutheran Churches has been referred to as the "Beaver Hills." Nellie Beaver Road is located in this part of Cabarrus County. Gold Hill began in 1842 when gold was discovered in the area and mining was begun. Mining was carried on here from 1842 until the early 1900's and again in the 1950's. Both gold and copper lodes were found in a 3.5 mile square area around Gold Hill.

Boating, Hiking & Mountain Biking

Morrow Mountain
Morrow Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the ancient Uwharrie Mountains of central North Carolina. The Uwharries are the oldest mountain range in North America. At one time they rose to nearly 20,000 feet above sea level, but erosion has gradually worn them down to little more than high hills. Although the park contains several peaks, Morrow Mountain is the highest point at 936 feet. However, the mountain still rises some 400 feet above the surrounding lower terrain, and offers superb views of the surrounding countryside on a clear day. In addition to the mountains, the park also contains the Yadkin-Pee Dee River, one of central North Carolina's largest river systems. From the overlook atop Morrow Mountain the river can clearly be viewed less than a half-mile away.

With 32 miles of trail in the park, Morrow Mountain is one of the most hiked state parks in North Carolina.

Badin Lake
Badin Lake is one of a series of lakes created by the daming of the Yadkin-Pee Dee River in the Uwharrie Lakes Region of the United States. It was created in 1917 by the Aluminum Company of America. It is contained by Narrows Dam at the town of Badin, North Carolina. Sitting within a valley, the lake is a very deep, with a maximum depth of 190 ft (58 m). The lake occupies 5,350 acres (22 km²) and has 115 mi (185 km) of shoreline. It's waters have an average summer temperature of 84.4 °F (29.1 °C) and an average winter temperature of 50.6 °F (10.3 °C). No bridges or ferries cross Badin Lake, and it is overshadowed by Morrow Mountain State Park. The lake lies within Stanly and Montgomery counties. Much of the lake's eastern shoreline lies within the Uwharrie National Forest.

Lake Tillery
Lake Tillery is the manmade lake between Badin Lake and Blewitt Falls Lake in the Uwharrie Lakes Region of North Carolina. It is located entirely within Stanly County and Montgomery County, NC. The lake was created by the daming of the Pee Dee River which is newly formed by the junction of the Yadkin River with the Uwharrie River several miles to the north. Norwood, NC in neighboring Stanly County uses as its town motto "Gateway to Lake Tillery".

Uwharrie National Forest
According to geologists, these mountains are remnants of a chain of islands crushed between the collission of the North American and the African continental plates. They may be the oldest mountains in the US, but are greatly eroded to their present height of approx.1000 ft.
The trails of the Uwharrie National Forest are very popular with mountain bikers. The forest is also popular with hunters and fishermen.

Downtown Albemarle
Albemarle was established in 1841 as the county seat of Stanly County and incorporated as a town in 1857. Stanly County was formed one year earlier from Montgomery County. After Nancy Almond Hearne and her children donated a 50-acre tract, the town was planned on a grid system and divided into 72 equal lots. The original boundaries of the town are shaded in gray on the Map of Downtown Albemarle.

Through most of the 19th Century, Albemarle was a quiet, rustic hamlet surrounded by farmland and thickly-wooded forests. Like all of the county's scattered villages during this period, Albemarle served as an adjunct to the surrounding rural community, providing artisan industries such as blacksmith and saddlemaking shops, as well as serving as the county seat. The Marks and Snuggs Houses are among the town's only remaining relics of this by-gone era.

By the early 20th century, Albemarle had become a center of commerce and industry that was shaping, rather than simply responding to, the county's rural base. Around the turn of the century, the rail lines came to Albemarle, bringing with them the industrialization that spurred the growth of this town with antebellum roots. These changes dramatically altered Albemarle's built environment and established it as one of North Carolina's significant textile centers.
